We are The Vagabond Boys, a songwriting duo from the Heartland, Saint Louis, Missouri, USA. Most of our music
reserved for our own guitars and vocals providing you, the listener, with a true feel for how the song was created.
Our style is a fresh blend of southern rock inter-woven with sounds of folk, jazz, and gospel while staying connected
to grass roots old school country music. This is a new genre we affectionately refer to as Heartland Country Rock.
The Vagabond Boys are two long time friends, Paul Highsmith and Johnny Sprang, who came from different
backgrounds of strong musical influence.
Paul grew up south of Detroit during the Motown era. Later influenced by the folk rock sound of the early seventies,
Paul began playing guitar and writing songs as a teenager. Musical influences include Bruce Springsteen, Bob
Dylan, Harry Chapin, Paul Simon, Cat Stevens, Niel Young, Jim Croce, and Gordon Lighfoot. Paul is inspired by
these songwriters who have an uncanny ability to create stories in their songs.
Johnny was born and raised in rural small town Ohio, just south of Cleveland, the birth of rock and roll. He was
greatly influenced by his dad’s musical taste (Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson, Ray Price, and Marty
Robbins) who was also a guitar player and inspired Johnny to learn. During his high school years, he played in
rock and roll bands and was a young teenager when the Beatles first came to America. Johnny's current musical
influences include Mark Knopfler, Jim Croce, Gordon Lightfoot, Mickey Newbury, Alan Jackson, George Strait, and
Clint Black.
Paul and Johnny met working for the same company and instantly became friends. Even though friends for many
years, they had always talk about music, their guitar playing, and songwriting, but had never actually shared their
music with each other. Then one day in September 2007, Paul had written a new song but needed some help with
lyrics and arrangement, so he called Johnny, who took his guitar and headed for the place where they use to work
(always empty on the weekends) and it was there The Vagabond Boys began.
Shortly after that "first session" they realized there was something special in blending their songwriting ideas and
talents, and The Vagabond Boys want to share their music with as many listeners as possible. The more they
share their music with others, the more people have joined the fan base that is rapidly growing both locally and
nationally.
Presently The Vagabond Boys are not public performers due to family commitments and time restrictions which is
why they have collaborated with their good friends in Nashville Tennessee USA "The Nashville All-Starz" to
professionally record their songs. The Vagabond Boys not only aspire to write songs that would be recorded by top
named recording artists and do well on the charts, but more importantly to capture the hearts and ears of everyone
who listens.....and thanks for listening!
